Lower Owens River Via Driftboat
True Winter Fishery
In my mind, the Lower Owens River (near Bishop, CA) is a true winter fishery. During the winter months, the river’s distinctive conditions come together, creating an ideal environment for anglers seeking a memorable experience. The interplay of seasonal factors produces a harmonious setting, transforming the river into an excellent winter playground.
Optimal Time to Pick the Fruit
When people ask me about the best time to fish this stretch of river, my answer has remained consistent for more than twenty years: the optimal period begins on Super Bowl Sunday and continues through late March. During these weeks, anglers can expect some of the most rewarding fishing experiences the river has to offer.
Recent Conditions and Techniques
To hold true to my word, the past couple of days have seen fishing improve from good to truly exceptional. Factors such as improved water clarity, higher sun angles that result in warmer water temperatures, favorable water flows, and great Mayfly hatches have all contributed to this uptick. I primarily fish the river by driftboat, which allows me the freedom to comb uncharted waters away from the crowds, enhancing both the experience and the catch.
I receive requests for prime drift boat fishing throughout the year, but the next six to eight weeks are truly the best time. If this trip is on your Sierra flyfishing bucket list, now is the perfect moment to make it happen. You might even consider using some sick days…..just saying!!
