APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS

Personal Observations from 45 Years

Having spent 45 years in the Eastern Sierra, I have witnessed a broad spectrum of winter conditions. Some winters have stood out for their size and intensity, but the majority tend to be mild or average. This variability makes each season distinct and memorable. Currently, we are experiencing a below normal snowpack, and I would like to share my perspective on planning your spring flyfishing around these conditions.

April: The Transition Month

April is often the month where winter and spring compete for dominance. It regularly brings the last signs of winter, with weather conditions that can change quickly and unexpectedly. The forecast for April indicates average to cool temperatures. Notably, Hot Creek Ranch received six to eight inches of snow last weekend.

Run-off 2026

This season, run-off is expected to be mild. Ideally, cooler weather would persist into May, followed by a sudden rise in temperature and strong sunlight. Such a scenario would produce a robust surge of run-off, helping to clear weeds and scour the beds of our rivers and creeks....I'm turning into a wisherman.

Regardless of how the weather unfolds, the run-off will likely be short and gentle.

Anticipated Seasonal Shift

Based on recent weather patterns and current snowpack conditions, my gut says that the summer season is arriving ahead of schedule—almost as if we are experiencing the typical summer conditions a month earlier than usual. This shift suggests that the best opportunities for flyfishing on local creeks and rivers will occur earlier in the year than in previous seasons.

Spring Targeted Locations and Timing

My springtime targets are the East Walker, the Owens River and other haunts. Warm spring air and clear cold water bring the first of the early summer bug hatches. As fish become active after winter, my aim is to present our flies early in the season—before crowds arrive inspired by social media posts. This year presents a unique convergence of factors, creating an
